A1 Team Australia will start tomorrow's A1 Grand Prix of Nations, Dubai sprint race from 22nd position on the grid after an enthralling qualifying session today.
Australia was one of only four nations to record a time in the opening segment of qualifying, after Salvador Duran crashed the Mexican car heavily, causing a red flag.
A1 Team Australia's driver, Will Davison, recorded his best time in the fourth session of a 1:47.639, giving Australia an aggregate time of 3:36.276. Davison's other time was taken from segment two.
Under the unique A1 Grand Prix qualifying system - there are four 15-minute open sessions, where each team is allowed one flying lap, the best two times for each team are aggregated, resulting in the final grid.
Davison will start alongside Mathias Lauda in the Austrian car.
The 23 year old's time in the earlier practice session indicated there is some encouraging pace in the car, which the team will unlock for the races tomorrow, he says:
"Our time in practice this morning was not bad, I feel as though we can find that pace for the races tomorrow and with some consistent laps being laid down, I'm sure we can move up the grid for race two," Davison said positively.
"With the pit stops in the main race, it's going to be a matter of us just biding our time and seeing what happens in the opening race so we can then build on it and hopefully bring home some solid points, I'll certainly be giving my all out there."
Team boss, Alan Jones, is also feeling optimistic about the Foster's supported Australian team's chances.
"We're not as far up the grid as we would like obviously," said Jones. "At the previous race, we started in a similar position but didn't make the most of it. Will feels comfortable with the track and the car showed some good pace this morning, so I think we can turn it around."
"Aussies aren't known for giving up - we'll be in there fighting and I genuinely believe we can come away with some decent results tomorrow," Jones concluded.
There will be two races, the 30 minute Sprint Race, beginning at 13:30 local time and the 60 minute feature race, which will begin at 15:00 local time.
Fox Sports will show the event live into Australia from 20:00 AEDT Sunday evening.
