Limited to just one hour-long practice session today at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the A1 Grand Prix of Nations field was finally unleashed on the 3.6km circuit late afternoon in preparation for Sunday's penultimate round of the inaugural 'World Cup of Motorsport'.
A1 Team Canada's Patrick Carpentier, a two-time Champ Car winner at the circuit, opted to remain on wet tires throughout the session as it was officially declared 'wet' thanks to the varying track conditions, Laguna Seca still feeling the effect of the heavy rains which have plagued the Monterey Peninsula recently combined with the A1GP pack 'cleaning' the circuit today as the first cars out. Gambling on a dry track tomorrow, the decision to remain on wet tires today gives the team an additional set of slicks at their disposal with two further practice sessions leading up to the afternoon's four-run qualifying session.
Patrick Carpentier: "I didn't want to use up my slick tires because the track was still pretty damp in places, especially with the river of water coming down parts of the hill and running on track. I'm hoping the set-up of the car that we worked on today transfers in the dry, there's around three to four seconds difference here between running on slicks or wets. I think we'll be in good shape. If it rains then I'm pretty sure we'll still be competitive, that was certainly the case in Mexico last time round when the set-up worked in both conditions."
