A1 Team Switzerland aims for tenth podium in Mexico Monterrey, Mexico
Monday, 20 February 2006 - A1 Team Switzerland heads to round nine of the inaugural A1 Grand Prix series, the World Cup of Motorsports at the historical Parque Fundidora Monterrey in Mexico. The team's driver, Neel Jani aims to continue closing the gap on championship leader France in his final race before taking up his driving responsibilities with Formula One team Scuderia Toro Rosso.
Switzerland's 25-year-old Giorgio Mondini will take over from Jani for the final two rounds of the A1 Grand Prix season. A1 Team Switzerland currently lies second in the championship on 104 points, 28 points behind France.
"I'm determined to score my tenth podium for the team in my last race this weekend," says Jani. "Representing my country in this new series has been a real honour and I'm so proud that we are in a good position in the championship and in with a chance of winning. I'm sure I'll enjoy the next race as I have done all the others this season, but it will feel a bit sad being my last one for the team. I've never seen the track which looks interesting with a good number of overtaking possibilities. I'm sure it'll be a really interesting race and I'll be doing everything I can to go out on a high note."
Max Welti, team principal, A1 Team Switzerland comments: "It's always great to discover racing in a new continent and especially in a country like Mexico where the people are really enthusiastic about motor racing. For me, being in Mexico brings back a lot of emotions because of the good memories in sports prototypes in 89-90 and later in Formula I. I know the crowd will give us a very warm welcome and it should be an exciting weekend. We'll miss Neel Jani he's a really talented driver who has helped the progress and development of our team a lot. Thanks to him, the team has scored podiums and points in fourteen out of sixteen races a very impressive record. His contribution has been invaluable and we wish him all the best for an excellent career. It's also quite flattering that both our drivers this season Jani and his replacement Mondini will be seen in F1 in 2006."
A1 Team Switzerland is one of 25 teams contesting the new A1 Grand Prix Series, the "World Cup of Motorsport". After the last round of the season in Indonesia, A1 Team Switzerland is ranked second in the championship with 104 points.
