Vitantonio Liuzzi delivers Italy first-ever A1GP Pole Position

Sprint Race Qualifying: Pole Position - 1:30.875
Feature Race Qualifying: 10th - 1:31.852

Vitantonio Liuzzi provided Italy with the first-ever A1 Grand Prix Pole Position on Saturday, as he clocked the fastest lap around Portimao in the timed qualifying session for the shorter Sprint Race. Liuzzi clocked a fast lap of 1:30.875, topping the field despite the two segments were conditioned by red flags. In the second session, deciding the starting order for the longer Feature Race, Vitantonio battled tire issues, and had to content with 10th. After clocking an extremely strong first-sector time, he struggled to get the best out of his new tires, settling for Row 5.

Liuzzi, who's not testing for Force India's Formula 1 due to the recent testing ban by the authorities, will be back racing tomorrow, in an attempt to keep the Italian team at the top of the standings and get the right raceday feeling back again...

Vitantonio Liuzzi Team Italy

"In the first Qualifying session we decided to use the PowerBoost, while many rivals opted to use it on the second. Nonetheless, having secured the pole spot is a great result for us. In the second session, we experienced some trouble while on new tires, as the new rubber proved not to be much different than the scrubbed one. Despite a great first sector, the car started to slide around, and we had to content to 10th place. On Race 1, we'll aim for the win, and we'll be starting to push since the beginning. On Race 2 I think we can hope for a podium finish, though it won't be easy. While we have some work to complete on the car to let it suit my driving style more, the track is something spectacular, and really fun to drive."

"Today's Pole Position is, of course, dedicated to all the people suffering from the earthquake that hit my home region, Abruzzo. I hope things will start to improve there soon"
