Marco Holzer for the first time in A1 Team Germanys car
In the fifth round of the A1 Grand Prix Series in Indonesia, Willi Weber's A1 Team Germany gives a chance to another newcomer: Marco Holzer from Bobingen (Germany) who finished third in this year's Formula BMW Germany series drove the 520 hp A1 Grand Prix car on Friday in the rookie session for the first time. Since regular driver Nico Hulkenberg has already contested eight races, he is no longer eligible for the rookie session.
"I am overwhelmed that I was given the opportunity to tip-toe into the A1 Grand Prix Series ", enthused 18-year old Marco Holzer after the first practice. "The A1 Grand Prix car is pretty fast, it gives you a good feeling and changing gears with the paddles behind the steering wheel is good fun too." On the 4.12 kilometre circuit, the Bavarian driver gathered valuable experience. "I've only seen the A1 GP Series on television so far and I always had the desire to race there. This dream has come true now. Together with the Formula 1 test courtesy of BMW Sauber two weeks ago, this chance in the A1 GP Series is the most wonderful Christmas present I could have dreamed of."
In the afternoon, Nico Hulkenberg returned to the cockpit of the A1 Grand Prix car. The 19-year old hotshoe from Emmerich did 23 laps in Sentul. He achieved a time of 1m18.508s, finishing the session on eighth spot. The eight fastest drivers are separated by only 0.516s.
"After a test in the GP2 series one week ago, I had to get used again to the A1 Grand Prix car", reported Hulkenberg. "When the new tyres provided perfect grip, I wasn't good enough yet. I have braked way too late and my driving style was too aggressive. But there is a positive aspect: the car's balance is excellent as usual and we managed very good and constant times later on in the session. So I am optimistic for qualifying on Saturday when you need to squeeze every ounce out of the package." The qualifying is separated into four single-lap segments. The cumulated times of the two fastest laps determine the starting order for the first of two races on Sunday.
