2005, Team Great Britain seizes Pole Position for Sunday's Sprint Race

A1 Team Great Britain's Robbie Kerr emerged triumphant from today's qualifying sessions at the Sentul Circuit in Indonesia. Kerr will be starting in pole position in tomorrow's Sprint race, following a highly successful performance this afternoon. The line-up for Sunday's Sprint Race will see Team Great Britain and Team France claim the front row of the grid.

In the third qualifying session Robbie Kerr emerged from the pit lanes on new tyres, and went on to set the fastest lap-time of the day. Completing the circuit with a time of 1'16.927, Kerr was the only driver to break the 1'17 mark.

Kerr went on to field the fastest time in the 4th session, and sealed his position at the head of the grid. Robbie finished 7th and 2nd in the first two sessions. Team Great Britain's strategy took advantage of the circuit conditions, taking calculated risks with the tyres. A1 Team Great Britain and A1 Team France were the only teams to use old tyres in the first session, which allowed them to maximise new tyres in the second and third sessions.

This strategy proved to be highly successful for both France, and ultimately Great Britain. Robbie's performance in all of the sessions highlights a consistent knowledge of the track, which will hold him in good stead for the Sprint and Feature races on Sunday.

Kerr continues to beam, as he enthusiastically appraises his performance this afternoon. "I'm really happy, this was a great result, and we've all worked very hard to achieve this. The prospect of rain was always an underlying pressure. But we timed it right, took risks, and clearly made the best decisions."

When pressed on the disappointing performance of A1 Team Brazil's new driver Christian Fittipaldi, Kerr remains focused. "I'm looking ahead, and will concentrate on the job in hand -- to push our car to its limit."

A1 Team Brazil currently lies four points ahead of Britain in the series standing, tomorrow's races could alter the balance. A1 Team Brazil is fielding Christian Fittipaldi, the nephew of the world champion Emerson Fittipaldi. Kerr has thrown down the gauntlet; "He's got a big name, lets see if he can live up to it."

Robbie is now in a good position for Sunday's racing. The practice sessions on Friday have ensured he has the relevant experience to approach the circuit if conditions deteriorate tomorrow. Speaking on Friday Robbie confirmed "The conditions have meant that we are now confident and experienced in performing in the rain if the weather is the same on Sunday."

Kerr is looking forward to the main races. "We have a few things to work on, and I'm now going to sit down with the engineers and put together a winning strategy. I'm happy with the circuit, putting in competitive times, and am having a great time!"

Tomorrow's Sprint Race will see A1 Team Great Britain starting in pole position on the grid for the first time, and could bring about the win Robbie and the team have long been courting.
