Michael Schumacher honours A1 Team Germany

Willi Weber's A1 Team Germany was honoured in a special way after the A1 GP World Cup of Motorsport finale at Brands Hatch last weekend. At the awards ceremony in the Royal Courts of Justice in London's City of Westminster the World Cup winner Germany was presented with its prize by Michael Schumacher on the evening of 30 April.

After the guests had admired the A1 Team Germany race car, signed by every team member, on display in front of the Victorian Gothic building they were party to a huge surprise inside: Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher presented A1 Team Germany with the World Cup Trophy and received a standing ovation from the assembled guests.

"The performance of both A1 Team Germany and its driver Nico Hulkenberg were excellent this season," emphasised Schumacher. "Nico possesses everything he needs for the future. There is a long way to go, but he works hard, so why shouldn't he achieve all his goals? I'm proud that my native country won the title. But the personal connections that I have also make this something very special to me."

Willi Weber, manager of both Michael Schumacher and A1 Team Germany, was attended the ceremony. The 19-year old Nico Hulkenberg from Emmerich, who contested ten of the eleven rounds this season, and the 18-year old Christian Vietoris from Gonnersdorf, who raced once, were delighted with the awards. "To win races and championships is exactly what a driver aims to achieve," explained Nico Hulkenberg. "This is what we managed this year. It's a fantastic championship and was great to represent your country. I'm proud that we have won this championship."

Willi Weber, who has participated with A1 Team Germany since the A1 GP World Cup of Motorsport was founded, commented: "I'm proud of this success for Germany. We established ourselves with the best young German talents against many strong competitors, some of whom already had Formula 1 experience. It goes without saying that we will be competing again next season. Our expressed goal is to defend the title."

The A1 GP World Cup of Motorsport, which is staged on every continent around the world, has been contested by 20 nations each winter season since autumn 2005. After France claimed the inaugural title in the opening year (2005/2006), the German team won the championship at the penultimate round of the series in the second season (2006/2007). The German squad won nine individual races in the process and recorded as many wins as the combined total of the following teams from Great Britain, New Zealand and Malaysia, which were credited with three wins each.

The 2007/2008 season opens between the 28 and 30 September 2007 in The Netherlands at the Zandvoort circuit.
