A1 TEAM MALAYSIA WELCOMES ANNOUNCEMENT OF NEW A1GP CALENDAR
A1 Team Malaysia is revving up for the third season of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport and with today's announcement of the 2007/08 calendar is making plans for a busy eight months of racing, which includes a return to the team's home race, the Malaysian round of the A1GP Series which will take place at Sepang International Circuit from 23 -- 25 November this year.
The newly issued calendar consolidates the schedule of eleven race weekends held last season, with the field of national teams returning to all the venues hosting A1GP in 2006/07 except for one of China's events moving from Beijing to Zhuhai.
The Malaysian round will be the fourth event, following on from two European openers, in Zandvoort, Netherlands and Brno, Czech Republic and an undesignated Asian venue. A1 Team Malaysia driver, Alex Yoong, has fond memories of Brno having taken a double victory there last season. He says, "Brno gave us our best results and we went from there to Beijing. I hope that we can have another two victories in the Czech Republic and be riding high when we move on to Asia. Whatever happens I know that the Malaysian people will give a huge welcome to the A1GP Series and will once again put on a great show for the local fans and international visitors."
Co-promoted by Global One International and Sepang International Circuit (SIC), the Malaysian leg of the A1GP will see SIC handle the race logistics, while sports promoter, Global One International take charge of the promotions and publicity for the race.
Jack Cunningham, Chief Executive, A1 Team Malaysia says, "We're delighted that A1GP has selected Malaysia as one of the nations represented on the global calendar. There is high demand by nations to be a host for these events, so it is a testament to the Malaysian circuit and the event organisers that they have retained a slot on the calendar. We will be very proud to run at our home event again."
The third season of the A1GP Series kicks off with the two European events and then crosses to Asia, moving on to the only new venue, Zhuhai circuit in China before the end of 2007. Racing resumes in January with two Australasian rounds in New Zealand and Australia, then heads to Durban, South Africa, on to Mexico City, back to China for the second visit, this time at Shanghai circuit, before the final round at Brands Hatch circuit in the UK.
"It's a well balanced calendar," says Cunningham. "Over the course of the first two seasons there has been a steep learning curve for A1GP and the teams, so it is good to be able to have a firm structure with knowledge of the tracks and the facilities, so that we can focus on giving our fans the best motorsport entertainment that we can.
A1 Team Malaysia is working hard to be ready for the new season and we're looking forward to building on our success. We've established ourselves as one of the front running teams and we aim to continue the momentum from the previous two seasons and make further progress in our aims to lift the World Cup of Motorsport trophy and bring it back to Sepang, the home of Malaysian motorsport."
