Strong start for Belmayne A1 Team Ireland in A1GP opener

Belmayne A1 Team Ireland made a strong start in the opening round of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport today, scoring eight points with 8th and 6th placed finishes for former Jordan F1 driver Ralph Firman in the Sprint and Feature Races at Circuit Zandvoort Park, The Netherlands.

The Irish team started the day well by scoring three championship points in the Sprint Race after Firman brought the car home 8th. He then started the Feature Race from 6th on the grid and, although he dropped back to 9th during the first half of the race two excellent pit stops by the crew put him back in contention and he began to scythe back through the field. After the second pit stop the Team Ireland car over took the Netherlands and New Zealand to put claim a strong sixth and give the Belmayne-sponsored team a further five valuable championship points.

Driver Ralph Firman: "I really enjoyed the weekend - the whole team did a really good job especially in the two pit stops which helped us keep our position in the race. The car had a little bit too much under steer through the race but the team adjusted this by tweaking tyre pressures at both pit stops. By half distance I was really feeling positive with the car, having been away from single seater racing for over a year. I'm delighted to be back driving for Belmayne A1 Team Ireland and scoring the same number of points in one day as the team achieve last season!"

Dan Walmsley; Race Engineer: "Overall a very positive weekend and a fantastic platform to build on for rest of the season. The main positives have been the work ethic of team and a starting set up to take forward for the rest of the season. The team did a great job in the pit stops during the Feature Race and Ralph drove a fantastic final stint to secure 6th position with some great over taking".

Mark Kershaw, Team Owner: "A great start to the third season, to equal last season's points in one days work is a good testament to how hard the team has worked over the winter. We've very strong technical team I'm confident that we'll be a force to reckon for the rest of the season".

TV3 will commence coverage of the 2007/08 A1GP series by showing highlights of today's races he second race is live on Sunday 14th October from Brno, Czech Republic
