Lexington, OH - August 25, 2001 - After running a well thought out and mistake free race, the two car team of Alex Job Racing, McKenna Porsche had a good showing here at Mid-Ohio against the perennially faster BMW M3 V8's.
Sharing the driving duties on the third place finishing #22, Randy Pobst was able to get a good start and settled down into a fast racing groove. His best lap times came in the middle of his driving stint.
"The car was very good today," said Pobst. "It got even better as the race went on and I think it showed in my driving. It did get quite warm in the car towards the end, and I was ready to get out. Of course, as soon as I cooled off a little, I wanted to get right back in but my co-driver Christian (Menzel) did a heck of job in the car." Michelin Tires had recorded a track temperature of 102 degrees F during the race.
The third place podium finish by the #22 McKenna Porsche 911 GT3 RS unfortunately came at their teammate's expense. A broken left side half-shaft ended the day the # 23 sister car and moved it's co- drivers Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr down to the third and fourth positions in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) GT class championship points race.
After taking over driving duties from co-driver Sascha Maassen, Lucas Luhr felt something wrong in the back of the car. Right after the pit stop to change drivers, there was a lengthy caution period. The team felt that the new tires might have picked up extra rubber from the track. After the race resumed, the condition got worse, until the shaft failed with less than four minutes remaining in the 2 hour, 45 minute race.
After the race Maassen commented on losing his points lead: "I new it was bound to happen sooner or later. We didn't make any mistakes today, the car really felt balanced, but we just had some bad luck. Hopefully the next time luck will be on our side."
Now in its 13th year of competition, Alex Job Racing (AJR) is one of the premier independent Porsche teams in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). Based in a brand new 16,000 sq. ft. facility in Tavares, Florida, AJR entries have tallied three victories in the 12 Hours of Sebring, one win in the 24 Hours of Daytona, ten ALMS wins and captured the 1999 ALMS GT Driver and Manufacturer Championships.
