ATHERTON INVITED TO SPEAK AT CLEMSON UNIVERSITY
Scott Atherton, President/CEO of the American Le Mans Series - the world's leading sports car championship - has been invited by the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) to visit the innovative automotive engineering research and economic development campus Thursday, December 3.
Atherton will tour CU-ICAR's Carroll A. Campbell Jr. Graduate and Engineering Center - including its Deep Orange lab where faculty and students are designing and building prototype vehicles - and get a behind the scenes look at its test cells and laboratories. The afternoon session, a portion of which is open to the media, will be followed by a reception for Atherton who will then provide an address about how the American Le Mans Series has emerged as the Global Leader in Green Racing with its leading edge innovation and technological development of alternative fuels with influential automotive industry manufacturers. The 6:30 p.m. presentation is open to the public.
Among the corporate attendees at the reception and presentation will be executives from Michelin and BMW. Both companies are actively involved in the American Le Mans Series and have major North American operations in Greenville.Michelin provides tires for more than 20 teams in the Series. In addition, the MICHELIN GREEN X Challenge is a competition within each race that scores every race car on fuel efficiency, environmental impact and overall performance. The concept was created by the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and SAE International. BMW, meanwhile, races two of its Efficient Dynamics M3s on the circuit under the direction of Rahal Letterman Racing. The two-car effort earned seven podiums in 2009, including a pole and victory at Road America.

Through CU-ICAR, Clemson University interfaces with industry for the associated engineering, management, marketing and communication disciplines related to automotive and motorsports research.
About the American Le Mans Series
The American Le Mans Series is based in Braselton, GA and recognized for its worldwide leadership in relevant technology development and alternative fuel innovation within the motorsports industry. All cars in the Series race on one of four alternative fuels or powertrains: clean sulfur-free diesel, E85 [cellulosic], E10 or electric hybrid. At the end of last season, it also tested a bio-butanol in race conditions. The Series has more automobile marques involved than any other major race series in the world as manufacturers develop relevant technologies on track that transfer directly to the customer showroom. In the tradition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, multiple classes of cars -- purpose-built prototypes and production-based Grand Touring models -- race on the track at the same time to create compelling race action with constant passing on road and street courses in top North American markets.
