INDIANAPOLIS (December 11, 2000) -- The 2001 schedule for the American Le Mans Series has been completed with the addition of an event at Britain's Donington Park, series officials have announced.

The Donington Park event will take place on April 14 in a slot on the schedule that had been listed as "TBA" when the 2001 series calendar was announced in September. The race will be one of the two European events that will be options for ALMS teams competing for the 2001 series championship.

The event will be the first of five races in Europe for the expanded European Le Mans Series in 2001.

"I am delighted that such a prestigious Championship as this one will be coming to Donington Park," said Robert Fearnall, Chief Executive of Donington Park. "The Easter weekend race will be one of the highlights of the year."

"It was really important to us to have a race in Britain, as historically there is a strong and enthusiastic following for sports cars there," said Don Panoz, founder of the American and European Le Mans Series. "Donington has some superb facilities to offer and I'm sure they will put on a great show for everyone."

Practice and qualifying for the two-hour, 45-minute race will be on Friday, April 13, with the race to be held on Saturday, April 14.

The ALMS title will be determined in a series of nine North American races, but teams also have the option of competing in one of two designated events in the European Le Mans Series, with the opportunity of having points earned from that event replacing the lowest point total earned in a North American race. The second option race is May 20 at Jarama, Spain.
