Old Lyme, Conn. (January 25, 2001)-- Callaway Cars, the performance engineering division of Callaway Companies, announces the debut of its powerful C12-R super sportscar in the 2001 American Le Mans series (ALMS). The race-bred C12-R features an ultra-potent dose of performance, courtesy of its new 7.0L, 480-horspower SuperNatural engine. Callaway will challenge factory competitors in the GT class, beginning with the Grand Prix of Texas, scheduled for March 4 at Texas Motor Speedway, Ft. Worth, Texas.
The C12-R will be campaigned by Aspen Knolls Racing. Team owner and Staten Island, NY real estate developer Bob Mazzuoccola will share driving duties with his 2000 season co-driver Shane Lewis.
Callaway Companies founder and president, Reeves Callaway, has three decades of experience building production cars that beg to be raced. "Every element of the C12-R's genetic code was programmed for competition," said Callaway. "Like every Callaway car, the C12-R's ultra-competitive race track character is enhanced by its impeccable on-the-street manners-a trait that has always been the hallmark of our design and engineering philosophy."
The C12-R was developed by an international team of design, engineering and competition experts, including partner IVM Engineering of Munich, Germany. IVM is recognized as a leader in high-performance series development for Germany's leading automakers. Callaway Competition, Callaway Companies' Leingarten, Germany-based competition division, handcrafts each edition of the powerful C12-R.
The C12-R will be on display at the 2001 Geneva International Auto Show at the IVM Engineering exhibit. U.S. enthusiasts can see it in action live at all 2001 ALMS races.
