DRAYSON-BARWELL TAKES UP THE 'GREEN CHALLENGE'
Green is a common theme with Drayson-Barwell's GT2 effort in the American Le Mans Series. The transporter is green. So is the team's Aston Martin Vantage GT2. Even more important, though, is the green mindset the British team has employed all season. As a result, that makes next week's Petit Le Mans powered by the Totally New MAZDA6 more relevant as the debut of the Green Challenge coincides with the annual 1,000-mile/10-hour event.
The Green Challenge is a race-within-a-race in which all cars will be scored on overall performance, fuel efficiency and environmental impact. The Drayson-Barwell Aston Martin Vantage GT2 is set to feature strongly in the fight for top honours in this exciting new Series initiative that has the backing of such groups as the U.S. Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency and SAE International.
Drayson-Barwell has been developing the all new Aston Martin Racing-built Vantage GT2 during this year's American Le Mans Series, running the car on the latest 'second-generation' cellulosic E85 Bio-Ethanol. In 2007, the UK- based team and drivers Paul Drayson and Jonny Cocker successfully pioneered the use of bio-ethanol fuel in the British GT Championship. They also made history and claimed the first UK national series race win for an alternative-fuelled car. Drayson-Barwell also won the team championship and finished runner-up in the overall driver standings.
The use of E85 bio-ethanol in the Petit Le Mans event is set to give Drayson-Barwell an edge in terms of fighting for the Green Challenge crown. Along with the factory Corvette GT1 team, which also uses E85 fuel, the Aston Martin Vantage GT2 will be one of the favorites to lift this prestigious new trophy among the Grand Touring cars.
Helping in its cause, Drayson-Barwell has added works Aston Martin Racing driver Darren Turner to the lineup. Darren has previously won the Petit Le Mans event in the GT1 class, as well as having two GT1 Le Mans 24 Hour victories to his name.
