Lowe's Fernandez Racing Announces Year-Long Support of Habitat for Humanity
HOUSTON, Texas (April 19, 2007) -- Adrian Fernandez and Luis Diaz will have an additional incentive to take their #15 Lowe's Acura Lola to the front in this Saturday's American Le Mans Series (ALMS) race -- the Lone Star Grand Prix at JAGFlo Speedway Reliant Park. The Lowe's Fernandez Racing drivers today participated in a Habitat for Humanity build northeast of downtown Houston with Fernandez announcing that the team will donate 10 percent (10%) of all prize money earned in its 2007 ALMS campaign to Habitat for Humanity.
"Today was the second Habitat for Humanity build that I have participated in," said Fernandez, who last raced on the streets of Houston in 2001. "This is just a tremendous program with people coming together to help families in need to build their own homes and I can see why Habitat has a special place in so many hearts at Lowe's.
"This has struck a note with me personally, and I am very happy to announce that Lowe's Fernandez Racing will be supporting Habitat for Humanity by donating a percentage of our prize money from every ALMS race. It is a great motivation for everyone on our team to do their best to help a great program. Our participation in the build today was to help spread the word about Habitat for Humanity and to encourage people to get involved and volunteer. I am looking forward to doing more builds as we tour the country with the ALMS race schedule."
Founded in 1976, Habitat has built more than 225,000 houses around the world, providing more than one million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Habitat is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor [sweat equity] into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.
"I know of Habitat for Humanity through the great work they have done helping families in Mexico, so it is very rewarding to be able to participate in builds like we did today and to know that we are also racing to help a good cause," added Diaz.
In addition to Fernandez and Diaz, today's Habitat for Humanity build site in northeast Houston included members of Team Lowe's Racing, the American Le Mans Series, Lowe's employees, future Habitat homeowners and Houston Habitat for Humanity volunteers. Lowe's joined forces with Habitat for Humanity International to impact communities across the country by building houses in partnership with families in need. Lowe's also provides $2.85 million to Habitat for Humanity's long-term Gulf Coast Rebuilding.
"We want to thank Adrian and Luis for coming out today to help raise awareness for Habitat for Humanity," said Ellen Efsic of Habitat for Humanity. "Through the generous support of Lowe's and now the addition of Lowe's Fernandez Racing, it is our hope that race fans around the world will look into their local Habitat programs as either volunteers or with a donation. Every effort makes a difference. We want to wish Adrian and Luis the best in their bid for a win at Houston this weekend."
