INDIANAPOLIS (June 21, 2000) -- Five drivers from the American Le Mans Series, including two fresh from wins last weekend in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will compete in Sunday's NASCAR Winston Cup event at Sears Point Raceway. The ALMS will be at the California road course next month for The X-Factor Grand Prix of Sonoma on July 22.
Ron Fellows and Scott Pruett, who co-drove for Corvette Racing to the GTS class win at Le Mans, have been tapped to drive in the Dodge/Save Mart 350, as have Boris Said, Anthony Lazzaro and Dorsey Schroeder. Fellows and Pruett, teammates at Le Mans, are also connected in the NASCAR effort as both are getting the opportunity to race because of Joe Nemechek. Fellows is driving for a team owned by Nemechek, while Pruett is substituting for the injured Nemechek for the team owned by Andy Petree.
Said and Schroeder have been hired by NASCAR team owners to replace other drivers in the Sears Point race because of their road racing experience, a practice that has become common for NASCAR Winston Cup's two annual road course events. Said, driver for BMW Team PTG in the ALMS, will replace Robert Pressley, while Schroeder, who drove earlier this year in the ALMS for Champion Racing, will pilot the car normally driven by Jason Leffler.
Lazzaro, who competed on the ALMS earlier this year for Kelly-Moss Racing, will attempt to qualify for the Sears Point race in a car fielded by new team owner Tom Coleman.
