Long Beach, California – Flying Lizard finished 2nd and 3rd in GTC in Long Beach today, the team's first double podium finish since 2008. Starting from 3rd on the grid, Nelson Canache Jr. worked quickly through traffic, leading the class by the start of the second lap.
In the sister car No 44, Brian Wong charged from 7th to 5th place on the first lap alone and was up to 3rd place by the end of lap 4. The race was interrupted by multiple cautions from that point on, and during the following yellows and restarts the team settled into strong 2nd and 3rd places in the running order, with Brian in the No 44 leading Nelson in the No 45.Due to the 40-minute minimum drive time, the 2nd caution proved to be the most significant, as almost the entire field peeled off into the pits for its fuel and tire stops and driver changes.
Despite the packed pits, both cars were able to maintain their positions during the stops and come out in the top 3. From that point on in the race, Spencer Pumpelly began a long chase of the No 30 in earnest, eventually finishing two seconds back for a second consecutive 2nd place GTC finish.
Dion von Moltke held off pole sitter Jeroen Bleekemolen for over one hour and fifteen minutes, earning the No 44 a 3rd place, podium finish in his first ever race with the team.
Dion spoke about the race, adding "What a great way to start my new relationship with Flying Lizard with a double podium! The team has been amazing to work with on all levels and they gave me a car that I could go out and battle with.
Brian drove a great first stint to put our PR Newswire / eSilicon Porsche up front, and that combined with a great pit stop is what allowed us to finish on the podium. I am looking forward to our next race in a few weeks."
The team next takes to the track at the third round of the 2013 ALMS championship at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca from May 9th to 11th. The team will again field two cars, the No 44 and No 45, with driver lineups to be announced within the coming weeks.
