With this result, the team also moves into a tie at the top of the points in the GTC Team championship with half of the season completed. The sister No 44 PR Newswire / eSilicon 911 GT3 Cup car, driven by Seth Neiman and Dion von Moltke, finished in 7th place after a tough day marred by multiple incidents.
The No 44 was twice delayed by incidents, once after being hit by a prototype in turn 1 at the end of Seth's stint, and again by a GT car which spun Dion with minutes remaining in the race. Long pit stops to fix crash damage cost the car multiple laps with it ending up 6 laps behind the GTC leader.
Dion talked about the challenging race, adding "It was a tough race from the go, and we felt like a ping pong ball out there. Seth was running very well but got run into quite a few times, mostly caused by some very poor decisions by other drivers working through traffic.
We got the worse end of that but even with the car not at 100% due to contact and damage, we still ran a very good pace and the crew kept us on track and as far to the front as possible. I think we had a podium car today but things didn't fall our way, but we will come back fighting at Road America."
Nelson's race in the No 45 started much better, with an immediate charge from third place to first on the opening lap. He built a significant gap before turning the car over to Spencer for his run. The inopportune timing of a late race yellow moved the No 45 from first to second and battles with lead lap cars and cars multiple laps down meant that Spencer was unable to catch the winning No 22 in time to attempt a pass before the race clock expired.
Nelson talked about the No 45 effort, saying "It was a great race for me from the beginning, taking the class lead on the first lap and working to build that lead throughout my stint. The setup was great and my job was to manage the traffic and take care of the car so that I could hand it over to Spencer in the best possible position and condition.
Spencer did a great job during his time in the car and the last yellow did hurt us. However, it's great to be tied for the championship points lead and we are starting the second half of the season in good shape and with strong momentum."
Flying Lizard next visits the racetrack for the 6th round of the 2013 ALMS season for the Orion Energy Systems 245 at Road America from August 9th to 11th.
