Winning Ferrari owner looks to return to American Le Mans Series in 2003.
BRASELTON, Ga. (November 25, 2002) -- In the closing stages of the 2002 American Le Mans Series season, the bright red Prodrive Ferrari garnered a great deal of attention as it took on the factory Corvette team in the GTS class of the sports car endurance racing series.
With fast professional drivers and a top-notch team, the Ferrari beat the Corvettes to win the GTS class in one event and was fastest qualifier twice while competing in the final three races of the season.
The owner of the Ferrari 550 Maranello is now in negotiations to return to North America and run the full American Le Mans Series championship in 2003.
"We would like to be there if it proves possible," said Frederic Dor, the owner of Care Racing Development and the owner of the Ferrari that was campaigned for him by the U.K.-based Prodrive organization in 2002. "We think we have a competitive car so we would like to be able to take the challenge to the Corvettes for a whole season and therefore be a potential championship contender."
Dor, who is French but is based in Switzerland, indicated that he is having "well-advanced" discussions with several racing teams, including Prodrive, to race his Maranellos in various championships in 2003. He is actively seeking sponsorship for the American Le Mans Series effort.
"We were very pleased to have Prodrive racing our car in four rounds of the ALMS," he said. "It is a great series with good geographic representation for Ferrari fans, so an ideal showcase for the car and our sponsors."
Tomas Enge of the Czech Republic and Peter Kox of The Netherlands piloted the car to victory in the ALMS round at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in September. Enge was the fastest qualifier in that event as well as for the season-ending Audi presents Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.
The team also competed in the Sebring 12-hour event that opened the ALMS season, and later competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the ALMS event in Miami.
The 2003 season for the American Le Mans Series begins with the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring at Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway Mar. 13-15.
