Sebring, FL -- Originally a WWII B-17 training base known as Hendricks Field, Sebring International Raceway will add to its remarkable history at 10:30 am on Saturday, March 15, when the 51st Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring takes the green flag.
A 65-car field considered to be among the best ever will battle on the historic 3.7 mile road course, which includes portions of the old Hendricks Field runways which once hosted a visit from the famous "Memphis Belle" B-17 crew. Since 1950, Sebring has been famous for international sports car racing, with names such as Dan Gurney, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss driving to victory. This year will be no different as world-class drivers from 23 different countries come to Sebring for the legendary endurance race.
Since the establishment of the American Le Mans Series, the world's leading teams have used Sebring as a springboard to success at the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans held every June in France. The past four years have seen the Sebring winning team go on to victory at Le Mans.
The ALMS features four different classes, headlined by the exotic LMP900 category, capable of speeds well in excess of 200mph on Sebring's famous Ulmann Straight.
This year, Team Bentley makes it's first North American appearance, hoping to end Audi's three-race win streak. Riley & Scott, Panoz, Lister, Dallara and Reynard prototypes will also be in the hunt for the prestigious win.
In the LMP675 category, the MG Lola entries are the favorite, and could very well challenge for the overall win. Pilbeam, Lola and the WR Peugeot are just a few of the other top challengers.
The GTS category will feature another titanic battle between the GM Corvette factory team and Ferrari. Dodge Viper, Saleen and the exotic new Pagani Zonda may also be a factor in his hard-fought production-based class.
The GT category features a remarkable 31 entries, with numerous challengers to Porsche, which dominated last season. Ferrari, Corvette, Spyker, TVR, BMW and Morgan round out a spectacular field.
Four drivers entered in this year's race have an opportunity to join the prestigious list of former three-time winners. Tom Kristensen, Andy Wallace, Stefan Johansson, and Rinaldo Capello all hope to make history by adding their names with legends Mario Andretti, Phil Hill, Hans Stuck and Olivier Gendebien.
Gates open on Wednesday, March 12, and remain open 24 hours a day through the running of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring on Saturday. Advance purchase ticket prices to the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring will remain in effect until March 1. After that date, gate prices will apply. To order tickets, race fans can call 800-626-7223.
