MIAMI (March 3, 2001) -- James Weaver won the pole position and then joined Butch Leitzinger in dominating Saturday's Nextel 250 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, leading all but three of the 104 laps in the Grand-Am Rolex Series event.
The Homestead-Miami Speedway season opening weekend will conclude Sunday with the Florida Dodge Dealers 400. Scott Riggs captured his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series pole with a lap of 36.982 seconds (146.017 mph), and will join Ricky Hendrick on the front row for the noon race. Ted Musgrave qualified third, followed by Lance Norick, Joe Ruttman, Jack Sprague, Travis Kvapil, Bryan Reffner, Dennis Setzer and Rick Crawford.
While the Dyson Racing Riley and Scott Ford dominated the event, the InterSport Banana Joe's Judd Lola of Jon Field and Oliver Gavin were in contention the entire distance, finishing 5.8 seconds behind. "It was a perfect weekend," said Weaver. "The car's been quick all weekend, and this is what we wanted to do. It doesn't always work out like this."
Weaver and Leitzinger dominated the Rolex Series season-opener at Daytona, holding a one-hour lead when their engine suddenly expired with only three hours remaining in the Rolex 24. Defending Miami winners Didier Theys and Mauro Baldi took third in the Doran Judd Crawford, followed by George Robinson and Jack Baldwin in a Riley and Scott Judd, and Joe Field and Clint Field in a Riley and Scott Ford.
Class winners were Nigel Greensall and Mike Durand in SRP II; Ron Johnson and Chris Bingham in GTS; Terry Borcheller and Toney Jennings in GT; and Doug Goad and Craig Conway in AGT.
Doug Bell won the Formula 2000 National Championship event, followed Memo Rojas and Peter Gray. Second generation drivers Vanina Ickx (daughter of endurance racing great Jacky Ickx) and Arie Luyendyk Jr. (son of the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner) competed, with Luyendyk finishing fifth and Ickx seventh.
Tickets will be on sale at the gate for Sunday's Florida Dodge Dealers 400, with unreserved grandstand seating $25. Children 12 and under are admitted free, while parking is also free. Gates open at 8 a.m. The first 200 people to purchase a Sunday general admission ticket will receive a Dodge Viper thrill ride on the racetrack. Rides begin at 9 a.m., and will run until 11 a.m. Family activities planned for Sunday include Radio Disney's version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire? -- Play It."
