MONTEREY, CALIF. – (October 14, 2000). The Banana Joe's Island Party InterSport Racing Judd-powered Lola B2K/10 qualified ninth for Sunday’s GlobalCenter Sports Car Championship, Round 10 of the 12-race American Le Mans Series season, at the Laguna Seca Raceway near Monterey. Jon Field, Dublin, Ohio, owner/driver of InterSport Racing, qualified the car in a session shortened by an off-course excursion. "We tried to pin down the front-end to get more grip mid-way through the session. Unfortunately, when we went back out, the front really, really gripped and spun the back-end around," said Field. "We went off into the gravel at Turn 6, ending our session." Throughout the weekend, drivers have complained about the slippery track and teams have tried different methods to get the proper set-up on their cars.
Although Field’s times in the second qualifying session were faster than those in the first session on Friday, he was unable to improve his starting position. Overall, it was a disappointing result for the InterSport team who worked hard to get the car ready for this race; they had to replace the engine and repair significant body damage following an incident two hours into the 10-hour Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga., two weeks ago.
Field expects to see continued improvement in the car’s performance during the race. "It’s a long race," he noted. "With a bit of luck, we should be able to finish higher than ninth place."
Rick Sutherland, Los Gatos, Calif., will co-drive the Banana Joe’s Island Party car this week-end. Sutherland will also co-drive with Field at the Las Vegas, Nev., race on October 28. The InterSport team does not plan to compete in the season finale at Adelaide, Australia, on New Year’s Eve; instead, they plan to use the time to work on preparing the car for the Rolex 24 at Daytona (Florida) test days in early January, 2001.
Sunday’s two-hour, forty-five minute race, on the 2.238-mile Laguna Seca road course, will begin at noon PDT on Sunday, October 15 and will be telecast live on the Speedvision network.
