Jack Spurney Named as General Manager For Honda Performance Development
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (July 10, 2006) Jack Spurney, a 28-year Honda veteran with extensive management experience in the company's Research & Development efforts, has been named General Manager for Honda Performance Development (HPD). The appointment was announced Monday by Robert Clarke, president of HPD.
Spurney comes to HPD from Honda R&D Americas, Inc., where as Senior Manager, Administration, he managed a staff of associates with responsibilities for strategic planning, human resources, facility operations and organizational development. He joined Honda in 1978, and has been involved in the design and construction of several major Honda facilities, including Honda R&D Americas' highly-advanced Automotive Engineering Design Center in Ohio.
"I am extremely pleased to be joining HPD," Spurney said. "I have worked in several capacities with Honda R&D, and motorsports is without question the ultimate form of research and development. With the ongoing program in the Indy Racing League and the new American Le Mans effort for Acura, this is an exciting time in HPD's history, and I am looking forward to being a part of it."
In addition to receiving a bachelors degree in psychology from George Williams College in Chicago, Spurney studied Japanese language and culture at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in California, prior to living in Japan from 1991-92.
"We welcome Jack to the HPD family," Clarke said in announcing the appointment. "His diverse background and extensive experience in R&D management will be a huge benefit for HPD as the company expands into sports car racing and continues with its on-going IndyCar program."
Honda Performance Development (HPD), a subsidiary of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., is the technical operations center for Honda's high performance racing engines. HPD coordinates Honda's participation in the IRL IndyCar Series and the recently-announced Acura effort in the American Le Mans Series. HPD last year opened a new, 123,000-square-foot headquarters in Santa Clarita, California, to increase the company's race manufacturing, research and development capabilities.
