INDIANAPOLIS (October 6, 2000) -- Marty Kaufman of Tampa, Fla., a longtime sports car racing official, has been named to the position of race director for the American Le Mans Series, effective immediately.
Kaufman replaces K.C. Van Niman, who has stepped down from the position to pursue other opportunities in motorsports.
In his new position, Kaufman will be responsible for officiating ALMS races from the control tower, as well as all practice and qualifying sessions, and will also conduct driver and team manager meetings. He will be a member of the Specialty Staff of Professional Sports Car Racing, Inc., the sanctioning body of the ALMS.
Kaufman, who raced sports cars in the mid-1960's, has been a race official for nearly 30 years, starting with the SCCA. He was chief steward for the Trans Am Series in 1986, and was named race director for IMSA in 1987, a position he held through 1996. After taking a year off, he returned to the sport in 1998, and most recently worked as race director for the Ferrari Challenge Series.
"We are very pleased to have an official with the experience and background of Marty Kaufman become part of the American Le Mans Series," said Scott Atherton, President and COO of Panoz Motor Sports Group, which founded the ALMS.
"We also greatly appreciate the contributions that have been made to the series by K.C. Van Niman, because he has played an important part in its rapid growth," Atherton said. "We wish him well in whatever he may elect to pursue, in or out of auto racing."
The next race for the American Le Mans Series will be the GlobalCenter Sports Car Championships Presented by Honda at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, Calif., on Oct. 15.
