MONTEREY, Calif. (October 9, 2000) -- One of the most successful and popular American road racing drivers of the past decade, Tom Kendall, has joined the American Le Mans Series and will make his debut with a new racing team in this weekend's GlobalCenter Sports Car Championships presented by Honda at Laguna Seca Raceway.
The Santa Monica, Calif., resident will drive a Saleen S7 supercar in the two-hour, 45-minute ALMS race that will be held on Sunday at the historic Laguna Seca course. Kendall will be teamed with co-drivers Terry Borcheller of Phoeniz and Ron Johnson of Laguna Beach, Calif., for the Saleen/Allen Speedlab Team.
Kendall, whose diverse racing background includes competition in NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series racing, as well as numerous wins, records and championships in road racing, is no stranger to racing and winning at Laguna Seca. His accomplishments include two wins in IMSA GT events, as well as two poles.
The holder of 10 professional driving championships, Kendall enjoyed one of his finest seasons as a driver in 1997 when he won a record-setting 11 consecutive Trans-Am races.
Steve Saleen, founder and president of Saleen, Inc., recently announced plans to compete in the ALMS for the remainder of the 2000 season, as well as running a two-car effort in 2001. Saleen is a six-time manufacturer champion in GT sports car racing, and Borcheller and Johnson have been Saleen drivers and teammates for the past three seasons.
A specialty vehicle manufacturer for 17 years, Saleen introduced the S7 supercar at the famed Monterey Historic Races this past August. The car is designed for racing as well as street usage.
In the American Le Mans Series, Saleen will challenge the powerful Dodge Vipers and Chevrolet Corvettes in the GTS class. Viper has won 13 of the past 15 races, while Corvette has won two of the last three.
The GlobalCenter Sports Car Championships will be televised live on Speedvision beginning at 3 p.m. (U.S. Eastern time) on Sunday, and will also be carried live on Eurosport. The ALMS Radio Web will have live coverage online at www.americanlemans.com.
Ticket information is available from Laguna Seca Raceway by calling 1-800-327-SECA, or online at www.laguna-seca.com.
