BRASELTON, Ga. (November 27, 2002) -- American Le Mans Series champions Tom Kristensen and Ron Fellows, two of the most accomplished road racing stars in the world, have been nominated for the 2002 Auto Racing All-America Team.
Kristensen, from Denmark, was the driving champion in the LMP 900 (Prototype) class in the American Le Mans Series in 2002, while Canada's Fellows was the champion in the GTS class for production-based cars. Both drivers enjoyed stellar seasons which included wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Members of the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) will select the 12 members of the All-America Team in six categories: road racing, stock car, open wheel, drag racing, short track and at-large. The membership will vote for a first and second team, and any driver who receives five percent of the vote will also be named to the honorable mention category. Members will also choose the Jerry Titus Award, which goes to the driver receiving the most votes, regardless of category.
Kristensen, 35, drove for the Audi Sport North America team during the 2002 season in an Audi R8 Prototype. He was a four-time race winner in the ALMS, being part of the winning team in events held at Road America, Le Circuit Trois-Rivieres, Mosport International Raceway and Road Atlanta. The most consistent Prototype driver in the series, Kristensen also finished second three times and never finished lower than fifth during the 10-race season. He set the fastest lap in four races and won two pole positions.
Fellows, 43, drove for the factory Corvette team in a Chevrolet Corvette C5-R. He won the GTS class in seven of the 10 ALMS races during the 2002 season, including wins in the series' two longest races, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and Audi presents Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. He also scored wins at Infineon (Sears Point) Raceway, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, RFK Stadium Circuit in Washington, D.C., Mosport International Raceway and the Miami street circuit. Fellows also won the GTS class pole six times in 10 races, tying the series record for the most poles by any driver in any class.
In addition to their wins in what is regarded as the premier sports car racing series in the world, both Kristensen and Fellows were also winners in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the famed endurance racing event upon which the American Le Mans Series is based. Kristensen was part of the overall winning team in the event for the third consecutive year and fourth in his career, while Fellows was part of the GTS class-winning team for the second consecutive year.
All-America Team award winners will be announced upon the completion of voting and will be honored at the annual AARWBA banquet in January.
