fine finale

BAM! (British American Motorsport) set the fifth-fastest GT time during Thursday testing for the American Le Mans Series season finale, with a time of one minute 28.007 seconds on the 2.238-mile Laguna S eca Raceway road course. Leo Hindery, Jr. is driving the No. 43 YES Network Porsche 911 GT3 RSR with Lucas Luhr and Sascha Maassen, who were ALMS GT co-champions in 2002 and 2003. Maassen also holds the track GT qualifying record.

"I can't imagine a better way to end a season than to be with Sascha and Lucas," Hindery said. "You'd cut your arm off to race with them any time, but at Laguna with its complexities, the last race of the season, a longer race, a night race and perfect weather ... having these two great friends and these two spectacular drivers as my partners for the last race is a real gift. Selfishly, I think we also have three guys that together, if we get just a little bit of breaks and if I hold up my end of the bargain, we can actually do really well this weekend."

school days

Sascha Maassen has experience in many facets of racing. In 2000, he successfully managed the Motorsport Academy Nurburgring in Germany. One of his initiatives was a program that tested aspiring drivers in open-wheel and touring car track performance, engineering feedback, physical fitness, English communication, media interviews, concentration and even intelligence. The drivers were rated and given assignments to improve their skills.

"In 2000, I did three more races than this season and I worked three days a week in the school," Maassen said. "This year, just doing 28 races and not having to work three days a week somewhere else is like having holidays. I don't know why everybody else is complaining when they do 20 races. That's nothing!"

racing luck

Lucas Luhr believes luck plays a part in racing, but he says it can't be influenced.

"In the past I wore two watches, always the same watches, in the race. I also had the same boxer shorts for Friday, a pair for Saturday. Once I lost a race with them, so I don't do it anymore," he said. "I think you have to have a little bit of luck or something that helps you, but you can't make it happen."

correction to race preview: This is the first ALMS race in which Luhr and Maassen have driven together this season, but not the first in North America. They also drove together in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
