Panoz tackle tough day in Laguna Seca qualifying.

Bryan Herta may have been pleased to place the #51 Panoz in front of his team-mate in qualifying at Laguna Seca, but both he and Jan Magnussen were disappointed with the overall results from American Le Mans Series qualifying today.

A two-time winner in CART at the Californian circuit, Herta stopped the clocks at 1:17.749, just out-pacing Magnussen at 1:17.812.

However, the two "Spirit of America" machines will start from position six and seven respectively on the grid.

"I am pleased to have been the fastest Panoz out there today, but we are obviously disappointed with the overall results," Herta said.

"The competition has been pretty fierce all weekend and we just haven't been able to find that outright speed we need.

"The car is quite comfortable to drive, but we will have to work really hard tomorrow to try and work our way through the pack. Like every track we go to, traffic can also play a role and we will have to have our strategy perfect as well.

"This track has been kind to me in the past so hopefully Bill (Auberlen) and I can have a good day tomorrow."

The #50 "Spirit of America" Panoz suffered two interrupted morning practice sessions, hindering Jan Magnussen and David Brabham's efforts to squeeze more time out of the car.

"We had a couple of small problems during the morning which lost us a bit of track time," Magnussen said.

"Unfortunately, you need as much time as you can on track, but our luck wasn't on our side this morning.

"We just have to put our heads down and push as hard as we can tomorrow. Getting a good start will be important and Brabs and I will be out to put as much pressure on the Audis and the Cadillacs as we can."

Tomorrow's two hour, 45 minute race kicks off at 12.00 noon Pacific time and is broadcast nationally on NBC.
