PIRELLI-SHOD ASTONS HOPE TO ICE THE CAKE AT LAGUNA
Championships Already Won in Le Mans Series and FIA-GT Series

LAGUNA SECA, Calif. Oct.18, 2006 - The year 2006 (Pirelli's 99th year of motorsports) has certainly been a vintage year for Pirelli and its various sports car race teams throughout the world.

With Vitaphone Maserati's 1-2 finish in the FIA GT race at Adria, Italy, last Sunday, the Pirelli-shod team of Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini won the GT1 Drivers' Championship, adding to the Team, Manufacturers' and Tire Championships already won in the FIA GT1. Equally significant was the GT2 Drivers' Championship won by Matteo Bobbi and Jaime Melo; their AF Corse Team had earlier won the Team, Manufacturers' and Tire GT2 Championships. Eight out of eight for Pirelli in the 2006 FIA GT Championships!

But eight is NOT enough. Back in August, the Pirelli-shod Autorlando Porsche Team clinched the Team, Manufacturers', Drivers' and Tire GT2 Championships in the 2006 Le Mans Series. A clean sweep in all three of the European GT Championships that Pirelli participated in!

What's left? Well, the best champagne in this vintage year may still be waiting to be uncorked at the Monterey Sports Car Championship, the final round of the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) at Laguna Seca this Saturday, October 21.

The Pirelli-shod Aston Martin DBR9s can put the icing on Pirelli's cake by winning this weekend's race: Tomas Enge, Aston Martin and Pirelli are still in the running for the Drivers', Team, Manufacturers' and Tire Championships...but the factory Corvettes certainly won't be easy. Corvette drivers Olivier Beretta and Oliver Gavin lead Enge by eleven points, while a real possibility exists for a tie between Aston Martin and Corvette if the DBR9s finish 1-2 like they did at Petit Le Mans last month. The permutations are considerable so watch the four-hour race into the Pacific sunset on Speed Channel at 2:45 PDT or listen to John Hindhaugh on ALMS Radio to figure out "Who's on First."
