Third and Fourth Row Grid Spots for Risi Ferraris
California's Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is one of those tracks where prior success doesn't necessarily translate into success going forward. Despite winning here the last two years, the two Risi Competizione Ferrari 430GTs didn't qualify at their full potential on this occasion and will start tomorrow's final round of the 2008 American Le Mans Series in 5th and 7th places on the grid. Mika Salo qualified the #62 car in 5th place and Nic Jonsson placed the #61 Krohn green Ferrari on the row behind.
An on track incident with another GT2 car at the end of the practice session was enough to upset the delicate balance of the #62 Ferrari on this twisty and unforgiving track, and Mika Salo struggled to get the best out of his car as a result. In qualifying itself, an 'off' after braking to avoid a slower GT2 car at the Corkscrew further damaged the left front of the car and it pulled sharply to the left for the remainder of the session. Salo was disappointed with the end result, but recognized that the competition was fierce.
Mika Salo: "The contact I had during practice compromised my qualifying because there was quite a lot of bodywork damage. But anyway, the Porsche guys were going really quick -- 1:22.0s for a GT2 car is unbelievable and I don't think I could have done that. Maybe a few tenths off, but that's all."
The #61 also had an issue which wasn't present in the practice session resulting in excessive cross weight in the car -- a problem which has now been detected and fixed for tomorrow's race.
Nic Jonsson: "The car was pulling a bit to the left under braking which it didn't do in practice and we didn't really know what the problem was until afterwards. We qualified 7th so can't be too disappointed, especially with the cross weight, as all the cars ahead of us are running the full schedule and are very, very fast. We'll have to go out and do the same as we always aim to do; stay out of trouble and get a good result."
