Saleen speed

Terry Borcheller knows how to hustle a Saleen S7R around Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, Calif. The Gainesville, Ga., driver enjoyed a perfect race weekend on the 2.238-mile road course in 2001, collecting the American Le Mans Series GTS pole position, fastest race lap and victory. He followed with a second-place class finish in 2002, all in the Saleen.

He'll return this week in the No. 63 ACEMCO Motorsports Saleen S7R, driving with Johnny Mowlem of London, England. Organizers have added a new twist for the Oct. 16 event - night racing. The race will start in daylight, but end after sunset, adding another challenge to an already demanding course. Borcheller is hoping his landmark will be visible, to help him set up for the daunting Corkscrew turn:

"I hope I can see my tree in the dark!"

Corvette kudos

Although he is quick at Laguna, Borcheller said the scenario is different from 2001, when he went on to win the ALMS GTS driver championship. He acknowledged the strength of the Corvette Racing team, which has already won the 2004 GTS driver, team and manufacturer titles.

"It's not the same because the Corvettes are so strong right now," he said. "But racing in the dark may actually work in our favor, because there's more potential for things to happen. To be honest, I think that's what it would take for us to beat them, something would have to go wrong for them."

ACEMCO championship

ACEMCO Motorsports team owner Jeff Giangrande will receive the IMSA Cup GTS trophy at the ALMS awards banquet in Monterey on Oct. 17. The team clinched the championship for the leading privateer GTS team after the Petit Le Mans race in September.

"Jeff and the entire ACEMCO team have given their all this year, they've worked as hard as anyone could work, and we'll see the IMSA Cup as our championship," Borcheller said. "I'm very proud of our team and what we've accomplished, and the commitment through adversity that they've all shown. We never gave up once."

track vows

Borcheller will add another first to his resume at Laguna Seca. He will assist race fans David and Cindy Bandilla in renewing their marriage vows. Motorsports Ministries pastor Richard Anderson will also participate in the ceremony.
