Three-four finish for The Racer&Rsquo;s Group.
MONTEREY, Calif.-- Sept. 22, 2002-- Kevin Buckler and Brian Cunningham took the mail2web.com No. 66 Porsche 911 GT3 RS from seventh on the starting grid to a third place podium finish at Sunday's Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. It was the team's seventh ALMS GT class podium finish.
The team struggled all weekend with various troubles including an engine change and flywheel breaking, causing Buckler and Cunningham to miss many of the practice sessions. Buckler took the green flag to start the race and moved No. 66 to fifth place before Cunningham took over. During his stint, Cunningham moved the car to fourth place. The Alex Job Racing No. 22 Porsche lost power due to gearshift lever breakage, allowing Cunningham to gain position to third in class.
The Racer's Group No. 67 car driven by Michael Schrom and Vic Rice started eighth on the grid and finished fourth as the checkered flag fell at the end of the two-hour, 45-minute race. Schrom had contact with one of the LMP 900 cars, but with consistent lap times, the team was still able to finish a strong fourth.
The Racer's Group has had a dream season that also includes class victories at the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, two of sports car racing's most revered endurance races. This weekend's podium finish keeps Buckler firmly in the hunt for Porsche Cup world championship and Schrom in line for a top three.
"We turned what started as an ugly weekend into a podium finish. We grenaded a flywheel early in the weekend and missed most of our chances at practice and setup. We literally threw a dart at the board for race setup today. We knew our best option was to just be smart. The crew really pushed hard to get the car on the track. I really owe this weekend to a great crew, long hours and hard work," Buckler said.
"This weekend is what team effort is all about. The crew put in 20 hours yesterday to get what needed to be done and they really came through. We missed a few of the practices we desperately needed. We had only one hour of practice in the car the entire weekend. We really lucked out," Cunningham said.
The Racer's Group is a manufacturer and distributor of high performance Porsche parts, an engine and chassis building and tuning facility, a full service Porsche prep facility, and a professional race team.
