AMERICAN RACE SERIES WOES CONTINUE FOR SMITH IN "HOME" RACE
Beverley's Guy Smith posted his third consecutive non-finish in the latest round of the American Le Mans Series at Lime Rock on Saturday (July 24) -- the Dyson Racing team's "home" circuit.
The 35-year-old Yorkshire man was sharing his Castrol Dyson Racing Lola Coupe Mazda with regular co-driver, Chris Dyson, but Smith never got the opportunity to race the British-built Lola in the 165-minute race.
Smith had qualified third fastest on the 30-car grid in difficult, wet conditions the previous day -- Guy setting his fastest lap on the very dying moments of the 20-minute session making the best of the Lola's British-manufactured Dunlop tyres.
Twenty-four hours later Dyson incredibly snatched the lead going into the first corner at the start of the race but the glory was short-lived, the American crawled in to the pits with just seven minutes on the clock with reduced power.
"It was a disappointing day for the Castrol Dyson Mazda team as we believed we had a car that was fast enough to win this race," said Guy.
"Chris made a great start to jump into the lead but our bad luck continued and on the seventh lap when the car suffered a mechanical problem. He pitted but after ten minutes, the car was pushed from the pit lane to the transporter for further examination. The car was officially retired thirty minutes later.
"It's been a very disappointing last couple of races especially as we have had the speed to challenge for the race win but we will re focus and try again at the next race at Mid Ohio."
Smith reflected on his qualifying performance: "I enjoy driving in the rain. That was the first time we'd run in the wet with Dunlop tyres and they performed brilliantly."
Smith, who had slipped from third to fifth in the championship standings after retiring from fourth place with 25mins to run in the previous race, and his wife, Alicia, spent time before the race in New York City.
Guy added: "We had a great time. Alicia is pregnant with our third child and we wanted to be able to spend some quality time and take advantage of one of the last opportunities for my wife to fly. She loves coming to New York and we always enjoy northeast Connecticut and being guests of the Dysons for the race. There are no better hosts."
The 1.5-mile, 10-turn Lime Rock circuit in Lakeville, Connecticut, is considered one of the most scenic road courses in North America and is only 50-miles from Dyson Racing's workshops. The sixth round of the American Le Mans Series will be held at Mid-Ohio in Lexington, Ohio, on August 15.
