Highcroft Racing Finishes Fourth In LMP1 Class at Lime Rock
LAKEVILLE, Conn., July 1 - An unusual problem with throttle cables spoiled Highcroft Racing's hopes for a podium finish in the New England Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park Saturday, but the Danbury, Conn.-based team still ended up fourth in the top class, LMP1, in the American Le Mans Series headliner.
The team qualified third in LMP1 and fifth overall with its Lola EX257 AER No. 9 for the two-hour-and-45-minute race, which will be broadcast Sunday on CBS at 4 p.m. Eastern time. Dayton started the race and then handed the car over to Andy Wallace of Buckingham, England, but the team had to retire from the event just 10 minutes shy of the two-hour mark due to the mechanical difficulties.
The team completed 81 laps to the winner's 177 and just 41 laps less than the final class podium finisher, which placed 19th overall to Highcroft's 20th.
"I was a real shame, because the car was handling really well," Wallace said afterwards. "Duncan started the race, and he noticed a problem right away. He pitted and we changed some things. When I got in I was OK for the best part of an hour before the problem resurfaced and we had to retire.
"The car was actually running very strong; it was nice to drive," Wallace added. "It was a good event too; there was a very good crowd there.
"We'll be OK; we'll just regroup and go on to the next race," he said.
