PORSCHE 911 RACE CARS PRACTICE, QUALIFY FOR LIME ROCK HOLIDAY RACE WEEKEND IN TWO DIFFERENT SERIES; ALEX JOB RACING FASTEST IN ALMS
--It was the first official test session for the New England Grand Prix, the American Le Mans Series event at Lime Rock Park, and qualifying for the SCCA SPEED World Challenge for the Porsche 911 GT3 RSR and Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race cars respectively-
LIME ROCK, Conn. - July 1, 2005 - Timo Bernhard, from Dittweller, Germany, the defending American Le Mans Series GT2 champion, and co-driver Romain Dumas, from Ales, France, emerged from the first official test session for the July 4 New England Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park with the fastest GT2 class time.
Driving the #23 Alex Job Racing Hyatt Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, Romain Dumas, who scored four poles in four tries last year, is looking for another prime starting position for Monday's main event. Second was the car which led this race last year for almost two hours, the #79 J3 Racing Porsche of Justin Jackson from Buford, Georgia, and Tim Sugden, from Leeds, England. It was Sugden who turned the quick time today. Third was the #31 Patrick Long, Las Vegas, NV/Jorg Bergmeister, Langenfeld, Germany Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Porsche, with Long turning the fast time.
The Le Mans GT2-winning entry, the #43 BAM! Porsche, was fourth, with Mike Rockenfeller, from Neuwied, Germany, and Wolf Henzler, from Wuertingen, Germany sharing the driving duites. Rockenfeller was part of the Le Mans effort, while Henzler is running in both the ALMS race and the SPEED World Challenge event. The two Flying Lizard Porsches, the #44 Lonnie Pechnik/Seth Neiman car and the #45 Johannes van Overbeek/Jon Fogarty car, were fifth and sixth respectively, although van Overbeek went off the track into the tire wall during the session, damaging the nose and the left front suspension of his Porsche.
The second Alex Job Porsche, the #24 Bell Microsystems racer with Randy Pobst and Ian Baas aboard was seventh in GT2, and the two Panoz Esperantes did not enter the session as their transporter with pit equipment was late to the track.
In the SPEED World Challenge series, James Sofronas, from Newport Beach, Calif., in the Global Motorsports Group Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, qualified fourth behind a Corvette and two Cadillac CTS-V six-liter race cars. Mid-Ohio winner Wolf Henzler qualified eighth in the #55 Applied Materials Farnbacher Loles Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, while Robin Liddell is 14th in the #66 AXA Financial/Pfaff Motors Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Henzler's teammate Ricardo Imery, from Miami, a rookie for World Challenge, is 18th in his #07 Cavenas Elevators Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, while Liddell's team owner, Jon Groom, is 20th in the #65 AXA/Pfaff Porsche.
The SPEED World Challenge GT race will take place on Saturday, July 2, at 12:40 PM, with live scoring available at www.world-challenge.com. The race will be telecast on Sunday, July 3, at 5:00 PM EDT on Speed Channel. The New England Grand Prix will take place on Monday, July 4, and will be telecast live starting at 3:00 PM EDT.
