Collision denies Robertson Racing strong result at Lime Rock

26/07/2010 - A collision in traffic 20 laps into the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix cost Robertson Racing a strong result in round 6 of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron after the Georgia-based team had made a superb start to the race.

Having struggled in the wet practice and qualifying sessions, the team's Ford GT was back on the pace in Saturday's dry pre-race warm-up and carried that form into the main event as the green lights went on at the start.

David Murry, who had managed to put the car tenth on the GT grid, was immediately into his stride and scythed through the field in the early stages. Fighting with works cars from Corvette and BMW and the factory-assisted Porsche and Ferrari teams, Murry was as high as second place when things suddenly began to go wrong for the team.

As he worked his way through slower traffic, the experienced racer made a move to go down the inside of one of the slower GTC-class Porsches, but suddenly saw the door closed in front of him and couldn't avoid the inevitable contact. The Robertson Racing Ford GT was pitched into a spin in the collision and had to limp back to pit lane with broken rear suspension.

The team did a sterling job to make repairs and send the car back into the race, but 40 minutes were lost in total and although both Murry and later team-mate Andrea Robertson drove solid stints, there was no way they could recover the deficit as they finished 11th in class.

Team Manager Andrew 'H' Smith: "It's obviously disappointing because we're confident a finish in the top five or six was possible. We had some problems in the wet during qualifying, but our race pace was really good and David (Murry) had made superb progress before the incident. The boys did a really good job to repair the suspension and I'm proud that once again we kept going and refused to give in. Our pace was competitive again after we came back out, which was encouraging when we still had some bodywork damage.

"We'll now head straight back to Atlanta where we'll have four or five days in the workshop to repair the car and prepare it for the next race and then it will be off to Mid-Ohio for the next round in two weeks time."
