Guy Smith heads for the seventh round of the American Le Mans Series next Sunday (16 Aug) aiming to banish a record he does not want.

The 34-year-old from Beverley competes at Road America determined to halt a slide in form which saw the Yorkshireman post a second consecutive retirement last Saturday (8 Aug).

A turbo issue on his BP Lola-Mazda Coupe forced Smith in to the pits just 20 minutes after taking over from his American co-driver Chris Dyson who had qualified fourth fastest overall, second in class, around the 2.4-mile 15-corner in Lexington track in Ohio.

"Chris handed the car over to me at mid-distance leading the LM P2 class," reflected Guy. "But I was back into the pits again soon afterwards when I lost turbo boost. It's the first time I've ever posted two ALMS retirements in consecutive races since I began racing for Dyson in 2005.

"It's a record I want to rid myself of quickly and thankfully with the Road America race next Sunday, I have the perfect opportunity to quickly get things back on track."

Chris Dyson had taken advantage of a 20mins full course caution period from the opening lap to make two stops to top up the car with fuel. When the race re-started Dyson was in 24th position but impressively carved his way through the field, setting fastest class lap to that point.

Smith has posted fifth, fourth and sixth place class finishes over the past three years at the fast and sweeping 4.048-mile, 14-corner Road Atlanta track in Wisconsin.
