UTAH'S MARTIN AND MELANIE SNOW COMBINE FOR SECOND AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES CHALLENGE WIN AS PORSCHE 911 GT3 CUP SURVIVES FIRST-LAP CRASH
LEXINGTON, Ohio - August 8 - After a disappointing mechanical failure while leading the American Le Mans Series Challenge class at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut three weeks ago, husband and wife racing team Martin and Melanie Snow, from Pleasant Grove, Utah, stormed to a two-lap win in the Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
The class, for matched Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race cars which also run in the Patron GT3 Challenge by Yokohama, was added to the America Le Mans Series at May's Utah Grand Prix, with the Snows winning two of the three races so far. But Martin, a veteran Porsche racer whose credits include a class win at the 12 Hours of Sebring (with Melanie) and preparation services for the Porsche factory team in the '90s, didn't know if Melanie would survive the first lap today.
"An LMP2 prototype hit her from behind on the first lap, and pushed her into the Bill Sweedler/Ed Brown Porsche, sending that car off the track. I thought the accident would rattle her, but it just made her try harder, and she gave me the car with a good lead, and I took it home for the win," said Martin.
Brown, who was driving the other car, was taken to Mid-Central Hospital in Mansfield, and was released after receiving treatment for a sore neck.
"We're glad Ed was alright - he is a friend and a good competitor. Our car was not badly damaged, and we were able to continue. All the race cars, especially the highly competitive GT2 class, made the race nerve-wracking, but fun. We had a good pit stop, and the tires wore well until the end," said Ms. Snow, a mother of three and a driving instructor a Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City.
When asked how much work the car needed before next week's two rounds of the Patron series plus the ALMS race at Road America, Melanie said it needed lots of work, but Martin assured everyone their crew was up for the challenge.
The John Baker/Guy Cosmo Porsche was second, with the Bob Faieta/Wesley Hoagland Porsche, winner of the last race at Lime Rock, was third. Six Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars started the event.
