TRG Qualify for Mid-Ohio
The two Porsches of The Racer's Group qualified for the ALMS Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio today, with Cort Wagner performing the qualifier for the team in the #66 New Century Mortgage/TRG Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. Today's qualifying session saw all the teams including TRG drop their lap times significantly, as the track surface became more amenable to provide traction.
Wagner said, "We're in an arms race with a bunch of very competitive teams at Mid-Ohio. We're working on our race pace as it is, and trying to extract that extra couple of seconds in our setup. Our times are very competitive, and we're happy with the progress we've made. Life's good -- and we're ready for the race tomorrow."
Wagner's co-driver, Le Mans 2004 class winner Patrick Long said, "I think that there are a lot of teams that focused today on setting the pole, and our crew's built us a good race car for tomorrow. I'm personally looking forward to the format of the race tomorrow -- it's my first two hour, 45 minute race that I'll ever have done, so it'll be a final feather in my cap in terms of endurance racing."
The #67 Flamingo Resort/TRG Porsche steadily lowered its lap times through Saturday's two practice sessions. Pierre Ehret, who missed the morning practice session with a back problem, turned in a great qualifying lap of 1:29.4 seconds.
"I had a bit of bad luck today," he explained, "I was about .8 seconds ahead of my fastest time at the last split and looking at a clear track ahead of me when the red flag came out, so I missed out on what would have been my fastest lap of the weekend. We're hoping for a strong race."
Team owner Kevin Buckler said, "I'm real happy with the entire team right now. We built two good, solid racecars for the race, with an eye on speed and longevity. The abrasive surface at this track is going to eat tires on some of these cars, and I believe a lot of teams will be caught out with tire problems halfway through their stints. We're still here preparing at the track late tonight -- I'm looking forward to a strong performance tomorrow."
CBS will join the Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio live at 2pm ET, and follow the race through to its conclusion at 4pm ET.
