MOWLEM TO JOIN LMP1 BATTLE WITH ZYTEK.
BRASELTON, Ga. (Sept.15, 2006) -- Versatile sports car racer Johnny Mowlem will join the factory Zytek prototype team for the next American Le Mans Series Petit Le Mans race at Road Atlanta on Sept. 30.
Mowlem, hot on the heels of his GT2 victory for Ferrari in the last ALMS race at Mosport earlier this month, now has a chance to win in consecutive races in different classes.
"It's obviously a huge deal for me to get into the fight for the overall win," Mowlem said. "Zytek are an incredibly professional team and it will be a privilege to be able to work closely with Tim Holloway who designed the car. The last time I was engineered actually by the car's designer was funnily enough the last time I raced a prototype in the Crawford P1 at Daytona."
Mowlem will co-drive the Zytek car with former Formula One star Stefan Johansson, who has been the teams' regular driver in the Le Mans Series in Europe.
"Driving with Stefan will be great as he is a good guy and also very experienced with this type of car and so I will be able to use that knowledge to get myself up to speed quickly," Mowlem said. "Obviously the bulk of my recent sports car success has been in the GT category so I will be on a very steep learning curve, but I have to say that I'm really relishing the challenge ahead of me!"
In addition, Mowlem will pilot an Aston-Martin for the Autosport Designs Racing team in the SPEED World GT Challenge. The World GT Challenge event is a support race that will be held at Road Atlanta during the Petit Le Mans weekend.
The Petit Le Mans is scheduled for 10 hours or 1,000 miles, whichever is completed first. The 12-turn Road Atlanta circuit is 2.54 miles long and is one that Mowlem is very familiar with, as he has competed in the race seven times and earned four podium finishes.
"The whole Zytek organization are very keen to showcase their LMP1 in America, which is the whole reason they are foregoing the last European race to come and over and do the last two races in the States. They are very serious in that intent and I believe the car may well surprise a few people. Having said that, we will also need some luck as well if we are to get the car to a great finish at the end of 10 hours." Mowlem said.
