No. 20 Dyson Sebring Diary: 16:23 Saturday with Bonus Coverage of the 16 Car

With the Dyson Porsches running third and sixth overall -- second and fifth in LMP2 -- just past mid-race in this 56th running of the Sebring 12 Hour classic, we're going to expand coverage a bit to pick up the 16 Car being driven by Chris Dyson and Guy Smith.

Both Dyson cars pitted about four minutes apart with a pair of mid-season form pit stops. Lally brought in the 20 Car first, handing off to Butch Leitzinger, changing tires and refueling in 32 seconds with the fresh fuel hose in place.

Lally had a reasonably double stint, although he said he thought the second stint was smoother. "There were cars I was hanging with the whole time. It's like I'd look up at the scoreboard every once in a while and I saw we were up to fifth, but we maintained sixth. The only cars that passed me were one Audi and the Peugeot, and I was having a good dice there with the Penske car that's left.

"That second stint was way better than the first. We were extremely loose in (Turns) 17 and 1, and it was a handful to hold onto and that's what was hurting our lap times. Then they fixed it on the pit stop and we went much better and were able to hold onto the Penske and pull away from everybody else."

Four minutes later, Dyson handed the 16 Car off to Guy Smith in a very quick and highly motivated stop -- the car was running second overall at the time and dropped back to third (second in LMP2) following the pit visit.

"I think it was a decent stint," Dyson said, "I think it's the heat of day now, so it's very easy to think that you're really struggling. I think everyone is probably compromised right now. But certainly the car was good enough that we could lap consistently and maintain our gap.

"So really, as the track rubbers in and it starts to cool off, I think the track's really going to come to us this evening. At least that's what we're hoping. But if we can just stay in touch and stay in contention, it's the kind of race where there's a lot of time left. You just have to take it one lap at a time and just avoid problems. If you can do that, you can probably fit into the mix somehow at the end."
