** ROAD AMERICA WELCOMES ALMS TEAMS -- American Le Mans Series teams have moved into the paddock area at Road America to get ready for Friday's first practice session for Sunday's Road America 500 presented by the Chicago Tribune.
Teams will have two hours of time on the four-mile circuit for testing on Friday, then two more hours of practice on Saturday morning. Qualifying will be held Saturday afternoon.
The 500-mile race, third-longest on the ALMS schedule, gets the green flag at 12:30 p.m. (CDT) on Sunday. CBS will have two hours of live television coverage from 4-6 p.m. (EDT), while the American Le Mans Series Radio Web will have full live coverage of qualifying and the race online at www.americanlemans.com.
** AUDI TEAM NOW WINNINGEST IN ALMS HISTORY -- With its win in last week's race at Mid-Ohio, Audi Sport North America is now the winningest entrant in the history of the American Le Mans Series. The team's 17th win surpassed the 16 wins that were scored by Team ORECA in the GTS class when it was racing Dodge Vipers in 1999 and 2000.
The 1-2 finish by the Audi team at Mid-Ohio was its 10th since joining the series, but its first since the event held at Infineon Raceway (formerly Sears Point) in July of 2001. Audi is now tied with Team ORECA for the most 1-2 finishes by a team in the history of the ALMS.
** CORVETTE RACING ADDS DRIVERS -- Corvette Racing has brought in third drivers for both of its entries in the Road America 500. The team's driver lineups will now be the same as they were for the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Oliver Gavin will join Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell in the #3 Corvette, the car that has not lost in four races this season. Franck Freon will co-drive with Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins in the #4 Corvette.
Fellows is on a record-setting pace in 2002. He has won the GTS pole for all three ALMS events this season and has tied former Viper Team ORECA driver Olivier Beretta for the most GTS poles (10) in series history.
** DUNO WILL RACE AT ROAD AMERICA AFTER ALL -- Milka Duno will be in the driving lineup for the MBD Sportscar team in the Road America 500 after deciding not to compete in an open-wheel series event in Europe this weekend.
The team had entered the #17 Panoz LMP07-Mugen with a "TBA" for one of the driving slots.
Duno and co-driver Scott Maxwell finished eighth last week at Mid-Ohio, the best finish so far for the MBD team. Duno was part of the winning team in three ALMS events last year in the LMP 675 class. Her move to the LMP 900 class this year made her the first woman to race the big Prototypes in series history.
** ARCHANGEL TEAM GOES TO THREE DRIVERS -- The Archangel Motorsports team has gone the three-driver route for its Lola B2K40-Ford (LMP 675 class) in this weekend's Road America 500.
Ben Devlin of England, who has driven the Archangel car in the past two ALMS races, will be in the car again, joined by Larry Oberto of Seattle and Peter MacLeod of Bellevue, Wash.
The Archangel team was the LMP 675 class winner in the recent ALMS event held in Sonoma, Calif.
** MID-OHIO RACE PRODUCES MANY FIRSTS -- Five drivers, two entrants and one marque were first-time winners on the American Le Mans Series in last weekend's event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Drivers Kevin Buckler and B.J. Zacharias were winners in the GT class, while Chris McMurry, Bryan Willman and Jeff Bucknum were winners in the LMP 675 class. Each was scoring his first ALMS win.
Buckler's The Racers Group team and Team Bucknum Racing were each first-time winners as entrants in the series, and Bucknum's Pilbeam MP84-Nissan made Pilbeam a first-time winner as well.
** QUICK NOTES -- Panoz Motor Sports driver Gunnar Jeannette rode in the 4th of July Parade held in nearby Sheboygan, Wis., on Thursday. Jeannette, accompanied by several Hawaiian Tropic models, rode on a Panoz LMP-1 show car --. Though Road America is hosting its first American Le Mans Series race with the Road America 500, at least 36 of the entered drivers have competed in other events held at the track --. Jan Magnussen's third-place finish at Mid-Ohio gave him 27 top 10 finishes in ALMS competition, breaking a tie with JJ Lehto for the most in series history --.
