Patrick Long - Leading the Championship
May 8, 2009
SoCal Shenanigans
LBGP Podium Patrick and his teammate Jorg Bergmeister notched their second win in three races in the 2009 American Le Mans Series season at Long Beach, putting some distance between themselves and their GT2 competitors in the championship. The second consecutive victory for the #45 boys means that the Lizards have dominated the two street course races for the 2009 season, both of them ironically "home" races for SoCal-born, St. Pete-living Patrick Long.
Patrick said, "It's pretty surreal to think that we were able to dominate in the #45 at both my "home" tracks this year, and it's a great momentum builder for the rest of the season.
So far, the Lizards have been in dominant form as a team, which has made my and Jorg's job relatively easy. Our primary competition has been with the #62 Risi Ferrari and the #87 Farnbacher Loles Porsche, and it's been fierce. We've really reveled in our team's consistency, because ultimately that's what will win the championship."
Tank On Riding an ex-Czech Army Tank:
When he's not racing for Porsche, Patrick gets to have some fun. Whether it's riding a TLD-prepared SuperMoto bike or kayaking on the intercoastal waterway near his house, he's doing something fun, somewhere. Recently, he got a ride in Oakley's new marketing vehicle / thrillwagon, an ex-Czech Army tank.
Reflecting on riding in the Oakley tank, Patrick said, "Climbing up onto it and looking around the controls was pretty fascinating, but when it fired up and we started running over jumps and hills on Oakley's property, it was a pretty insane experience. As you can imagine, it was a total blast! The calming and simultaneously most disturbing part was that Troy [Oakley's lead footwear designer and tank expert] knew EXACTLY what he was doing - which is a bit scary. It was a poor example of a smooth ride, but I can tell you, this thing would drove over or through just about ANYTHING."
Next up for Patrick is the American Le Mans Series race at Miller Motorsports Park outside Salt Lake City. He and teammate Jorg Bergmeister lead the ALMS GT2 championship at present, and will try to make it a three-peat at the beautiful Utah desert course.
Television coverage for the 2009 ALMS Grand Prix of Utah will be broadcast tape-delayed on Sunday, May 17 at 10:00pm EDT, on SPEED.
