Longtime SCCA World Challenge and Trans-Am racer Lou Gigliotti revealed last October that he would be moving his LG Motorsports team to the American Le Mans Series for 2008. Gigliotti has teamed up with Riley Technologies to campaign a Corvette C6 in the highly competitive GT2 category.
With the season about to begin, Gigliotti announced Monday the team's driver line-up for the Twelve Hours of Sebring. The three-time World Challenge Champion will team with fellow SCCA racer Doug Petersen and Belgian sports car hot shoe Marc Goossens in the season-opening round for the ALMS.
Riley Technologies, in conjunction with LGMotorsports, has been working around the clock to get the first chassis ready for the season. While the car has yet to hit the track for testing, Gigliotti has confidence the newest GT2 challenger will be a strong contender to take on the likes of Ferrari, Porsche, Panoz and Aston Martin.
"With the support of Riley Technologies we're extremely confident that the new Riley C6 Corvette will be a hit with Corvette fans and a stout performer in its class," said the team owner. "Our team has worked long and hard putting all of the pieces in place in order to make this happen. I have total confidence in my guys. The 2008 ALMS season, specifically in the GT2 class, will be one of the biggest challenges we've ever faced as a team, but we're up for it."
Petersen will share the wheel of the No. 28 Corvette with Gigliotti in the full 12-race season. Petersen, the 2004 SCCA Formula Mazda Champion, is a recent graduate of the Star Mazda Series and has also raced in the Ferrari Challenge in 2001. He shares a passion for success with Gigliotti as they embark on their maiden season in the ALMS.
"It takes a strong dedication on all fronts to run the type of events the ALMS schedule provides," said Peterson. "I have a great co-driver and a very capable team behind me, so I am very confident."
Goossens completes the driver line-up for Sebring. The Belgian endurance expert is a factory driver for Riley-Matthews Motorsports in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. Goossens is also trying to work his way up the ladder in the stock car racing world, having competed in select NASCAR Cup and Nationwide Series races in the past seasons, some under the now-defunct Riley-D'Hondt Motorsports banner. Before moving to the U.S., Goossens racked up wins and championships in various European sports car series, including the 2004 Belcar Championship and the 24 Hours of Zolder crown.
Riley Technologies, which is involved in multiple projects between the ALMS and Grand-Am, is excited for the new Pratt & Miller-supported GT2 Corvette program.
"We expect to be competitive," stated Bill Riley. "We are looking forward to seeing this new Corvette in action at Sebring and against this world class GT2 field."
The car is expected to hit the track for testing in early March, before kicking off the 2008 season a few weeks later on the historic ex-World War II airfield.
