BRASELTON, GA (Sept. 20, 2001) - The Firefighters Fund, designed to aid the firefighters who worked so valiantly during the terrorist attack on New York City, has been designated as the official charity of the Audi presents Petit Le Mans.
In conjunction with the Hall County Fire Department, several fundraising efforts will be made to aid the New York firefighters and their families. Hall County firefighters will be collecting donations on Oct. 5th and 6th at Road Atlanta. Friday is final qualifying day for the Audi presents Petit Le Mans, which starts at Noon on Saturday, Oct. 6th.
The Audi presents Petit Le Mans is the season finale for the American Le Mans Series. The ALMS and Road Atlanta are part of the Braselton-based Panoz Motor Sports Group.
"Firefighters and other safety personnel are very close to our hearts because of their involvement in motorsports, so we want to do everything we can to support the New York firefighters and their families," says Mike Swaine, Executive Director of Road Atlanta. "This event is dedicated to helping them."
Fans will also have a chance to donate to the Firefighters Fund during the race week kickoff party from 6-8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1st, at Andretti Speed Lab in Roswell. Proceeds from the purchase of race laps for the SuperKarts at Andretti Speed Lab will go to the Firefighters Fund. Fans will have the opportunity to compete for prizes and free race tickets by beating the best lap time of the professional drivers. Twenty-five of the top ALMS drivers and top Atlanta media representatives will be paired in teams for 15-minute qualifying races and a 40-minute feature. ALMS drivers will also be available for autographs throughout the evening.
Firefighters will also collect donations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Centennial Olympic Park, when several ALMS cars will be on display following a drive through downtown Atlanta.
The Hall County Fire Department will be highly visible at Road Atlanta in their fundraising for their New York counterparts. In addition to the "boot brigade" of donation collectors on Friday and Saturday, they will have a Fire Safety display in the Vendor Village area in the Road Atlanta infield. Also, members of the Hall County Fire Department will sing the National Anthem and provide the American Flag Color Guard during pre-race ceremonies.
"We want to do whatever we can in the efforts to aid the firefighters in New York," says Hall County Fire Chief Mike Satterfield. "We had a number of volunteers eager to go to New York to help, but New York is the largest firefighting group in the United States. They don't need people - they need funds for the firemen and their families. This fundraiser is one way all of us can be involved locally."
