BMW Team PTG notes: provisional qualifying, July 30 Rose City Grand Prix -- Portland [International Raceway] race five, American Le Mans Series

The BMW Team PTG M3s were fourth, sixth, seventh and 10th in the GT class after Friday's provisional qualifying session. Christian Menzel was quickest of the team in the #7 car, completing a lap on the 1.944-mile track in one minute 16.853 seconds at an average speed of 91.062 miles per hour, fourth on the provisional GT grid. Darren Law was fifth in the #10 M3 (1:17.325, 90.506 mph). Hans Stuck recorded the sixth-fastest time in the #9 M3 (1:17.757, 90.003 mph) but retired from the session with a broken right-rear output flange and was towed back to pit lane. Mark Simo qualified the #6 car ninth (1:18.522, 89.126 mph).

Christian Menzel, driver, #7 BMW M3

"For the moment we have no grip, but tomorrow's the next day. The track is good, but I think Mosport and Sears Point were highlights. Mosport and Sears Point were better for me because they're more driver's tracks."

Darren Law, driver, #10 BMW M3

"We're working on the car; we still have a little more to do. All of the team cars are close, which shows good preparation. The Porsches have straightaway speed that we can't match, but we have a few more things to try. We'll probably be better tomorrow."

Hans Stuck, driver, #9 BMW M3

"Something broke in the differential again, the same thing that happened to Boris [co-driver Said, during Friday morning practice]. So we'll have a new differential in for tomorrow." [with a grin] "Behind the tow car, we had a little understeer going in and oversteer going out, but I think we're okay."

Brian Krem, engineer

"It's real difficult to get a handle on the track in the afternoon. The track is really loose from morning to afternoon, and we're just struggling with getting the cars hooked up in the afternoon. But when we figure out how to get 'em hooked up, we'll be just fine."

home run

Hans Stuck hit his first home run in his first baseball game on Tuesday evening. He was in Spartanburg, S.C. for a corporate track session with the new BMW X5. Stuck's Green Team won the four-team baseball tournament organized for the participants. When asked what the team won, he replied, "Honor."
