triple talent
BAM! (British American Motorsport) will have a strong asset for the American Le Mans Series race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. - the driver who has won the most races in series history. Porsche factory driver Sascha Maassen of Raeren, Belgium will join Leo Hindery, Jr. of New York in the No. 43 YES Network Porsche 911 GT3 RSR for the Aug. 22 race. Maassen has 21 ALMS GT-class victories, and he is the only driver who has won every year since the series started in 1999.
Maassen is competing in three series this year - the ALMS, the FIA-GT Championship and the Le Mans Endurance Series. The triple schedule gives him more track time and extra insight to help set up the YES Network Porsche.
"It's good being in the car so often," he noted. "Even though the cars are all Porsches, they are all different because I'm driving with different tires and different shocks. This year, I have the best opportunity to feel the differences between the cars and their main components. I think I am more valuable to the team because I can give them more input on what they should improve - maybe I drove a car where that special part worked better."
new knee
Leo Hindery, Jr. earned a new knee at Road America in 2000. His right knee was crushed in a crash during a Ferrari Challenge race, but he didn't realize the extent of the injury until he was en route to Singapore following the race. He had emergency surgery in Singapore, then had the knee replaced when he returned to the United States.
Leo's laps
Hindery has fond memories of the 4.048-mile Road America course, despite his tangled knee. Like many drivers, he enjoys the local bratwurst, served piping hot trackside.
"Down and then up, then down, and then up, up and away. Thank God there are brats waiting for you at the end!" he said. "I left a knee once at turn five (literally), but every time I have raced at Road America I have left my heart in Wisconsin. Gosh, but I love racing at Road America, where the fans surround you with knowledge and affection. It will be a particular honor to race there this year with the incredible Sascha Maassen, who has won more times than I have spun, which is a lot."
