Bowtie Bullet Points: Chevy Notes for Road America
Chevrolet Can Clinch Manufacturers' Title in Elkhart Lake
ELKHART LAKE, Wisc. - The General Motors Chevrolet Corvette Racing team can clinch a fourth consecutive ALMS GTS Manufacturers' title this weekend at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc. The team is undefeated thus far in 2004.
Road America Engineering Notes
Doug Louth, engineering manager for Corvette Racing, has had the high-speed Road America circuit in his sights for some time. "Elkhart Lake has a lot of just about everything: long straights, low-speed corners, very high-speed corners, heavy braking and elevation changes," said Louth. "With this diversity, the vehicle configuration and tuning can't be biased to any one handling regime at the expense of another. The typical challenge of making the car work 'everywhere' is even more critical here. This scenario isn't surprising though, as it lines up with the only long-distance track on our schedule: Le Mans. In addition to our normal setup optimization process, our practice plans include aero and brake configuration tests specifically for this circuit."
O'Connell Throws First Pitch at Brewers-Cubs Game
Corvette Racing driver Johnny O'Connell threw the ceremonial first pitch at the Brewers-Cubs game at Milwaukee's Miller Park on Thursday. The ALMS champion drove a 2004 Commemorative Edition Corvette Z-06 onto the field before walking onto the mound to throw his pitch. The ALMS co-champion threw high heat, with an unverified speed approaching, in O'Connell's words, "something like the speed of the Corvette C5-R." He then returned to the Corvette and drove off the field to the applause of the fans. The Cubs beat the Brewers, nine to six.
Chevrolet, Fellows/O'Connell Lead GTS Points Standings
Chevrolet can claim a fourth-straight manufacturers' crown this weekend. The American marque holds a 55-point lead over Saleen heading into the final three races of the season. Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell have a 33-point lead in the ALMS drivers' championship over fellow Corvette drivers Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.
GTS Manufacturers - Points
Chevrolet - 126
Saleen - 71
Lamborghini - 36
Dodge - 30
Ferrari - 22
GTS Drivers Points
Fellows / O'Connell - 118
Gavin / Beretta - 85
Borcheller / Mowlem - 71
Fellows Second in NASCAR at Watkins Glen; To Race Cadillac Again This Weekend
Corvette driver Ron Fellows finished a remarkable second in last weekend's NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Watkins Glen International in upstate New York. The Canadian road racing expert started dead last-43rd position-after rain spoiled qualifying, but moved through the pack to nearly capture the victory. This weekend at Road America, he will once again reprise his role in the #12 Cadillac CTS-V, helping Team Cadillac improve their position for the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT Manufacturers' championship.
Corvettes Fastest In Friday Practice
The two factory Corvettes set the fastest times in the GTS class during practice on Friday afternoon.
The Corvette Racing team will qualify on Saturday at 1:55 p.m. Sunday's television coverage begins at 2:00 p.m. EDT on SPEED Channel.
