Atlanta, GA August 25, 2003: Jason Workman and James Gue finished 2nd in the LMP675 class (25th overall) at the American LeMans Series "Road America 500" at Elkhart Lake, WI on August 24.
The impressive result brings Workman back into 5th place in the Championship standings moving ahead of James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger. Workman is only nine points from 2nd place Jon Field and Duncan Dayton (tied).
Consistency has brought Workman within striking range of the top three positions. In the last four races, Workman has scored two seconds and one third place finish. He is the only driver in LMP675 to have scored points in the last 5 consecutive races. The only event that Workman failed to score points was the season opener at Sebring. Since that time, Workman has continually improved and brought the Essex Racing Lola-Nissan to the checkered flag in a points paying position.
"This was a great race, but not without its problems," said Workman. "On the start, I noticed that the alternator light was on. With no alternator, our fuel strategy went out the window. We had to pit every 50 minutes to change batteries but the Essex crew were ready for the change and we were able to change batteries without giving up too much time. We might have been able to improve our overall position with fewer pitstops but it did not hurt our LMP675 position. 2nd was as good as we could get today!"
It was Workman's first visit to the four mile Road America circuit. In making comparisons to the tracks of Europe, Workman indicated that the length of the track compared to those he raced in Europe, but every track has its own unique characteristics. He noted that his most vivid impressions of Road America were the long, fast straight-aways and sweeping curves.
The American LeMans Series now moves on to Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway, then Miami, Florida before the season ending, "Petit LeMans" event at Workman's home track of Road Atlanta.
"I'm really looking forward to these final three races, particularly Road Atlanta," said Workman. "I think that the Essex Racing team can make a very strong showing at Road Atlanta and with continued consistency, I think we have a great chance to move into the top three when the season ends in October."
