Aussie ace to drive Porsche in world's premier Sportscar series

AUSTRALIAN international Alex Davison has sealed a drive in two rounds of the highly prestigious American Le Mans Series.

The 23-year-old, who is racing in his fourth season of the German Carrera Cup for Hewlett-Packard/Phoenix Racing, will make his Sportscar debut after signing to drive in two rounds of the ALMS for British Porsche team PK Sport.

He will join team regular, Brit Robin Liddell, in the team's GT class Porsche GT3-RS in the Road Atlanta and Sears Point rounds of the championship.

"I am really excited about my first venture into Sportscar racing," said Davison.

"I've been racing in the Carrera Cup in Germany for four years and it's a very competitive series which is a real challenge, but racing in a series like the ALMS is something I've been aiming at since I came to Germany at the beginning of 2000."

"I visited the Le Mans 24 Hour in France a few weeks ago and was impressed not only by the race, but the PK Sport outfit. They are one of the top runners in the GT class. It will be a very competitive class with a bunch of other drivers, including Porsche-contracted drivers, in competitive cars in the class, but I'll be using the races as important experience."

"I think we can have a good result. The races are three hours and 45 minutes in length, so they aren't a sprint race but they aren't an endurance race. It will be my first time racing in America, bar my Supercup experience at Indianapolis last year, so I'm quite looking forward to it."

Davison has been racing Porsches in Germany for the past three seasons, driving in the highly-competitive Carrera Cup. Last year he dove-tailed his Carrera Cup commitments with a Porsche Supercup program, finishing on the podium at Hungaroring and Monza before taking victory in the penultimate round at Indianapolis.

The Weissach-based Australian won't get a chance to test the PK Sport machine before he races in round two of the ALMS at Road Atlanta on June 29, though he remains confident that the team can achieve a good result.

"For sure, it would be great to have a test in the car before the races in America, but all of my experience in Carrera Cup and Supercup cars will definitely be relative. The GT3-RS that I'll be driving in the ALMS is a bit more powerful and generally a little bit more advanced than the GT3 Cup car I race in Germany, so I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Davison will again suit up in the car at Sears Point in Sonoma, California on July 27 in round three of the series.

The American Le Mans Series is the world's premier Sportscar series. Run in the United States, it is run to the same rules as the world-famous Le Mans 24 Hour, recently won by the Bentley squad of Tom Kristensen, Rinaldo Capello and Guy Smith.

It features multiple classes of Sportscars. The outright 'LMP 900' class is for outright prototype race cars like the Bentley, Audi R8 and Panoz LMP, while the GTS class features cars such as the Ferrari 550 Maranello and the Chevrolet Corvette C5-R. Davison will be racing in the GT class, which is mainly populated by Porsche GT3-RS machines with Ferrari 360 Modenas the main opposition for the German marque.

Davison raced this weekend in the latest round of the German Porsche Carrera Cup at the Norisring street circuit. The Carrera Cup is the main support to the popular DTM German touring car category.
